Emily Matys and Sharon Newman (graduate students in the Bosak lab) visited the Science Club for Girls in Lawrence, MA, where they answered the students’ questions and participated in a career panel, encouraging young women to enter the field of science.
Dr. Shikma Zaarur wins the Karl K. Turekian Prize for excellence in Geochemical or Cosmochemical studies (Awarded by Yale University). Dr. Zaarur received her Ph.D. from Yale University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow working in the Bosak lab.
Dr. Giulio Mariotti wins the Luna Leopold Young Scientist Award in Earth and Planetary Surface Processes. Dr. Mariotti received his Ph.D from Boston University (’13), and is now a Crosby Postdoctoral Fellow in the EAPS program at MIT (currently working in the Bosak lab). This June, members of the Bosak Lab took a sampling trip to Green Lake, New York. After five hours of driving, a day probing the depths with a rowboat, a Niskin bottle, and 80 meters of rope – we returned with water samples from multiple depths of this meromictic lake, teeming with anaerobic, sulfur reducing bacteria. Alex Petroff received 2010 Student Award and the Elizabeth Sulzman travel grant for his presentation about the growth geometry of conical stromatolites at the 2010 AGU Fall Meeting.
